Most common presentation of PCOS in adolescents and when in excess causes disfigurement. Some acne get infected causing severe pain, discomfort and disfigurement.

Excess male hormone secretion in PCOS causes increasing in the sebum secretion by the sebaceous glands( oil secreting glands) present in the skin. This allows the bacteria to grow leading to rupture of the follicle and formation of red or tender pimple.

PCOS-related acne tends to flare in areas that are usually “hormonally sensitive,” especially the lower third of the face  which includes cheeks, jawline, chin, and upper neck.

These acne tend to flare up before menstruation.

Remedies to relieve acne include:

  • Facial hygiene
  • Moisturisers- Non comedogenic
  • Sun screen lotions with SPF 30
  • Topical antibiotics.
  • Especially, the hormonal therapy to treat PCOS will help to relieve acne.
